Even though we had finally caught up on sleep, we just couldn't this morning. So after waking up, we took a several hour nap.
We finally left the apartment around 1pm and headed off to my favorite thing in a new city, a sandemanns free tour!! Martin our tour guide clued us into several things we didn't know about Copenhagen and Denmark such as
-Copenhagen was started by a "badass" bishop named Upsala in the 1167. He is depicted throughout the city with weapons in his hands, even though he never fought.
- The bishop built a wall around the city before the city was established and decreed no one could live outside of it. This was enforced until the 1800s.
- The congestion within the city walls as the city expanded, plus lack of knowledge of fire safety caused many fires.
-At one point, Denmark, Sweden(and Finland), Norway, Greenland and Iceland were all under the Danish crown.
-There is still a royal family in Denmark.
-There is a horse statue near the royal residences that can be considered the best in the world. The artist was paid by the hour and it took him 15 years to produce, 5 years after the commissioner died.
-The Danes vote on the best things about being Danish. Number one was universal health care.
-Hygge is a way of life in Denmark and means cozy or comfortable.
There are probably others buy we can't think of anymore.
We then went to the little mermaid statue on our own, which was not as exciting as the HUGE NYMPH(or goddess?) fountain before it.
We stopped by the house and tried to go in the opposite direction to hit up "westmarket", which seemed more local then touristy but most of it had closed down, so we had some Vietnamese food down the street and walked through the meatpacking district on our way back to the apartment.
I promised we'd go out a bit(not at all my forte), so we found a crappy tiki bar around the corner from the apartment. I got to have a "strawberry puree" margarita.
Once realizing we'd done over 32000 steps, beating our previously set record the day before, we have up and crashed!!
