This morning was not pleasant. Jetlag. Hunger. Tiredness. Even a little anxiety mixed in for good measure. But Joe can rally. Oh can he rally. He's nearly always in good spirits!
We tried to stay asleep, after waking up for the first time at midnight but it was still a rough transition.
We left the apartment around 10 and headed to the corner bakery. We had a mini pizza and a yogurt parfait. Joe wanted to have a Danish in Denmark but he is going to wait until tomorrow for that honor.
Our place is so central that we were able to do everything by foot!We headed to Tivoli gardens, our host gave us free tickets. We were super early(actually there was barely anyone on the streets) so we got some needed sundries and got back just in time for the opening.
Tivoli gardens is kinda like a disneyland, but a city block instead of off on it's own. Someone told me Disney was inspired by Tivoli gardens but we didn't get a chance to confirm. It has rides, a lagoon, themes from different cultures, carnival games and so much food. We got a good walk around but didn't go on any of the rides.
We then hit up the national museum, which I often depend on to ground me historically on the area I am traveling in. This did not do that adequately. It did include a general narrative though that included the viking age, Instead of the traditional European narrative that goes from the iron age right to the middle ages. But I'm still unclear how much Denmark operated alone, or as part of a larger Nordic culture.(or why Nordic s refer to themselves as Nordic the word kinds otherizes them, and makes them important only bc they are to the north of seemingly more important places). I'm also still confused when the royalty began and how much influence they had.
So we had a chance to figure that out, at a royal palace down the street but could not be bothered to pay the fee. So we decided to either do it another day or in another way.
We then went to Joe's suggestion, freetown Christiana. It is like a commune of sorts. A group of people in the 70s started squatting in old government buildings and retain their rights to this day. They make their own laws, from the most part and now sell wares, food and beer to entice the tourists.
We were pooped once this was over(according to my phone, we had done 28000 steps) and took a rest back at the apartment.
We went out for dinner later on, trying to push ourselves out longer. I think I said no to like 15 places before we finally found a good place, and ordered a baked goat cheese salad, a smorgesboard that included a herring dish, a shrimp dish and another fish dish. For dinner we ordered a fowl with some delicious baked potato and green beans.
I then surprised both of us by agreeing to continue the night at another place along the canal as long as it has a heat lamp and a blanket. Joe had a beer, a shot and a creme brulet and I had Muscat and some ice cream thing.
We finally crashed after 11pm!!
